Pair of WHS Students Garner Academic Attention

It's been an exciting few days for a pair of Wilmington High School students.

According to the blog for principal Eric Tracy, two WHS students have been recognized over recent days for their academic achievement.

Over the weekend, the Boston Globe announced its Scholastic Art and Writing Awards winners, two of which came from Wilmington.

Rachel Alatalo will receive a Gold Key during Awards Day in Boston on Sunday, March 3, for her science fiction/fantasy story titled "Gravity," and will also receive a Gold Key for her humor story called "Introducing the Apple."

In addition, Michelle Barnes was named an honorable mention selection for "Grandpa, Where I'm From," a poem she submitted to the contest.

But the recognition didn't stop there for Barnes. The senior was also selected as a finalist in the National Achievement Scholarship Program, Tracy posted in his blog.

"This status places her in the overall pool of candidates to be considered for National Achievement Scholarships to be offered in 2013," Tracy posted. "The selection process for the scholarships is underway. The final determinations will be made in late February 2013. Good luck Michelle!"
