Pigskin Preparations Underway

With the season fast approaching Wilmington Pop Warner participants are working hard to make every moment of practice count before the season begins on Sunday, Sept. 11.

There are, of course, a couple more stops, before the official games begin at the Glen Road Field.

Keep you eyes out on Saturday, Sept. 10, for cheerleaders and players out on their annual canning fundraiser. Participants will be armed with stickers available for a donation that will directly benefit the Wilmington Pop Warner Program. This is the main fundraiser for the Pop Warner Season so be ready to buy your sticker.

Following the sticker drive, Wilmington Pop Warner will be hosting its first ever Punt, Pass and Kick Event. Open to all youths ages 6-15, this event is sponsored by the National Football Program and hosted by Wilmington Pop Warner.

The event itself was first established in 1961 and is the oldest NFL Youth Football Program. Girls and boys will participate in five separate age divisions and the day features competitions in punting, passing and place kicking. Participants must wear sneakers and have a valid birth certificate either with them or on file with WPW.

Finally, on September 11, the Pop Warner Season begins. The Wildcats will begin their season at Glen Road Field against Winchester. Games will run throughout the day as local teams work to continue last year’s winning ways.

Last season two football teams made it deep into the playoffs and Wilmington’s A Team Cheerleaders came home from the Pop Warner Cheer and Dance Championships with a first place championship title.

In addition to opening the football season, Wilmington Pop Warner is currently planning a ceremony to mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks and pay honor to the victims.
