Protest Scheduled In Wilmington For Thursday Afternoon

The protest organizer calls for "a peaceful stand against racial injustice and discrimination in our community."

WILMINGTON, MA — A protest against racial injustice is scheduled in Wilmington for Thursday afternoon.

"Please join us in taking a peaceful stand against racial injustice and discrimination in our community," organizer Maggie Brown wrote. "Gathering will begin on the Wilmington Town Common at 3pm and proceed towards Rotary Park. All are welcome - bring a sign, wear black, and please remember to wear a mask!"

The "Community Walk for Justice" is scheduled to run from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

Police are planning to close Route 62 (Church Street from the Town Common to Main Street, beginning at 2 p.m.

"Thank you very much to everyone who has demonstrated an interest in standing together against injustice in our community at tomorrow's event," Brown wrote. "Your unequivocal support and willingness to challenge social injustice is an imperative component of dismantling systemic racism, and I look forward to confronting these difficult realities together tomorrow afternoon."

Brown asked participants to wear masks and social distance at the protest. She also asked that participants remain peaceful.

Protesters will hold a 8 minute and 46 second sitting moment of silence in the Common, then walk to the Police Department to kneel for another 8 minutes and 46 seconds, honoring the time George Floyd was held prone on the ground.
