School Art Show Planned at Wilmington Arts Center
Event takes place Friday from 5-8 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
Wilmington schools have a long list of talented art students. This weekend many of them will be on display after the school teamed up with a local venue.
For the first time ever, Wilmington Public Schools' Visual Arts Department holds an art show in conjunction with the Wilmington Arts Center. The show takes place Friday from 5-8 p.m. and continues from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday. There will be an opening reception and awards ceremony Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Included in the gallery will be award winning pieces from the high school's juried art show earlier this year.

"As this is our first art show, the department is extremely excited for the opportunity to showcase the work and talents of Wilmington's visual arts students and to share it with the greater community," said WHS visual art teacher Jennifer Fidler. "We hope to expand our show for next year to cover even more work from across the district."
The event was made possible thanks to Sara Brook from the Wilmington Arts Center, along with high school art teachers Megan Hinman, Daniel Fionte and Sara Sussman. Also instrumental in the event are elementary and middle school art teachers Holly Griffin, Carroll Conquest, Lynne Vik, Neal Roberts and Cara Wojcik.

According to Fidler, participation in art provides a variety of other key qualities for students.
"Making art is one of the most rewarding experiences a person can have," said Fidler. "The creative process helps to build and reinforce problem solving, cultural appreciation, and communication skills. Whether working in the visual or performing arts, students are given the opportunity to express themselves and their unique point of view to a greater community, better preparing them to succeed into today's society."
