Should Wilmington Buy Ristuccia Arena?

Selectmen to discuss scheduling December Special Town Meeting to authorize funds to purchase Ristuccia.

With the Bruins announcement over the summer that they are leaving their practice facility at Ristuccia Arena to move closer to Boston, town officials are looking to see if it would make sense for the town to purchase the rink.

Questions were raised back in August and continue to happen on social media about the role the arena plays in town in that when it was built nearly 30 years ago, it was said to allow access to the rink to Wilmington residents and youth hockey. Today, it caters more toward other interests over local ones.

The Wilmington Board of Selectmen will discuss calling a Special Town Meeting in December to authorize funds to acquire Ristuccia Arena. One item on Tuesday night’s agenda reads “Board to Consider Calling a Special Town Meeting for Thursday, December 4, 2014, 7:00 p.m. at the Wilmington Middle School Auditorium for the Purpose of Authorizing Funds for the Acquisition of the Elinor M. Ristuccia Arena Located at 190 Main Street.”
