Strong First Half Surges Redmen Past Rival Wildcats

For Wilmington girls soccer coach Sue Hendee, the formula was simple during her team’s 2-1 road loss to Tewksbury on Saturday.

“They had two opportunities to score and they did. We had opportunities to score and we didn’t,” said Hendee. “I think that was the difference in the game.”

The Redmen cashed in on two goals from Nicole Chaet in the opening minutes and though Rachael Mara added a first half tally for Wilmington, the Wildcats suffered their second loss in just over a week.

Hendee’s charges played strong in the second half, spending the majority of the frame in attack mode. Still, they couldn’t crack the scoreboard with the tying goal.

“That’s what we’ve been struggling with in games that we’ve lost,” said Hendee. “We’ve gotten down quickly and started to play well, but just didn’t seem to get that tying or go ahead goal.”

Wilmington now has three losses on the year, while Tewksbury dropped to 4-6-2 on the campaign.

Still, the Wildcats will spend the final two weeks of the regular season in the hunt for a second consecutive league title.

“I don’t think we’ve played badly,” said Hendee. “It’s just that we played with more intensity when we had to instead of coming out with the intensity from the start. That’s what we have to start doing is really starting the game off with the ‘We have to score’ intensity.”
