Third Inning is Charming for Wilmington Softball Team

Wildcats put up five runs in home half of the third to grab lead, hold on late for 5-4 win over Shawsheen.

Shawsheen Technical left the door open for the Wilmington softball team, and the Wildcats kicked it open.

The visitors made several errors in the third inning, and Wilmington took advantage with a five-run frame on Tuesday to erase a 2-0 deficit. The Wildcats held on for a 5-4 win to improve to 11-6 on the year.

Second baseman Lauren Zaremba dropped down a bunt with a runner on first and no one out in the third. The Shawsheen infield misplayed the ball and it ended up in right field as both runners scored.

Then, Chelsey Westenberg popped a ball onto the infield that was dropped, allowing another tally. Jackie Kennedy capped the inning with a two-run single, and Wilmington never relinquished its edge.

Starting pitcher Tori Lord hurled a complete game to earn the win. The Wildcats have two contests remaining before they begin North Division 2 postseason play. In addition, the team remains in the running for a Cape Ann League regular season title.
