Town Will Hold Ceremony To Rename Auditorium On Feb. 10

The name change honors the late Wimington Superintendent Joanne M. Benton

From WPS: Throughout her lengthy tenure with the Wilmington Public Schools, in her myriad roles as Assistant Superintendent, then Superintendent, and later as Interim Superintendent, Mrs. Joanne M. Benton was unwavering in her commitment to the community of Wilmington, leading the students and staff of the Wilmington Public Schools with grace and passion.

Inspired by her love of the arts, one of the areas that Mrs. Benton focused on was the design and furnishing of the new High School’s auditorium. As a direct result of her efforts, Wilmington Public Schools today has an auditorium with a performance stage that has enough square footage, along with sophisticated sound and lighting systems, as well as an orchestra pit, to showcase the sizable student band and string performance groups throughout the School District.

As approved by a vote at Town Meeting in May 2018, the naming of the Wilmington High School auditorium in honor of Joanne Benton, former Superintendent of Wilmington Public Schools, is scheduled for Sunday, February 10, 2019, at 2:00pm at Wilmington High School. The event will present the talents of Wilmington’s students and faculty to provide a fitting tribute to Mrs. Benton, culminating in the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at the entrance to the auditorium. All members of the Wilmington community are cordially invited to attend.
