We Have a Winner

Though the men's basketball Final Four doesn't tip off until Saturday night, Patch can already declare the winner of the first ever Wildcat Challenge.

They say “It ain’t over ‘til the fat lady sings.” In the Wildcat Challenge, the tournament ain’t over, but the fat lady is already bellowing out her favorite song.

, Wilmington Patch is able to declare a winner in our even though the men’s basketball Final Four doesn’t start until Saturday night.

girls basketball coach Jay Keane clung to a 39-38 advantage over boys coach Joe Maiella after the first two rounds of games. That’s when the bracket was won.

In the Sweet 16, Maiella correctly picked three teams to advance. He had North Carolina, Kansas and Florida moving on to the Elite Eight. The only problem, however, is that none of those teams made it any further.

Keane correctly picked North Carolina, Connecticut, Kansas and Florida to move on to the Elite Eight. Like his counterpart, Keane was also shut out of the Final Four as each of his remaining teams was picked off.

Every Sweet 16 game picked correctly was worth four points. That means that Maiella added 12 points to his initial total. Keane snagged 16 points in the round.

Since neither coach is able to mount any more points, we have a winner.

Wildcat girls basketball coach Jay Keane’s total of 55 points triumphs over boys mentor Joe Maiella, who racked up 50 points.

Congratulations to Keane, who will be presented with a special prize rewarding him for his basketball knowledge. Be sure to check back in the upcoming weeks to find out what it is.

Patch would also like to thank Maiella for participating in what we hope becomes an annual tradition.
