Wednesday night the Wilmington girls basketball team became the third squad in town to as they sealed their 10th victory of the season with a 50-43 decision against North Reading.

Emily Crannell stuck three three-pointers on the night and registered 15 points overall to lead the way for the Lady Wildcats.

“It’s really exciting for the kids to get their 10th win, and making the state tournament,” said head coach Jay Keane. “Every year we’ve made the tournament since I’ve been here, and that’s a credit to the girls because they’ve worked really hard.”

On Tuesday, Joseph Maiella’s Wilmington boys basketball team suffered what the coach called its worst loss since he took over. .

After losing to winless Ipswich, the locals traveled to North Andover and toppled the Knights in a critical Cape Ann League contest. With the win, Wilmington kept hopes alive of earning a potential share of the league title.

“Tonight probably doesn’t happen if we beat Ipswich,” said Maiella.

It had been a while since the Wilmington girls hockey team cracked the scoreboard, but they on Saturday afternoon at Ristuccia Arena.

Kelly Brandano, one of Wilmington’s two final-year players, celebrated Senior Night with a goal 13 seconds into play. The Lady Wildcats went on for a 6-2 victory.

“It was long overdue,” said head coach Joe McMahon, whose team hadn’t scored in three games. “They did it for the seniors. They’ve been in a funk lately, and they were able to get out of it today.”
