Where the Wildcats Stand in the Standings

A look at where sports teams check in as the season grinds on.

The winter sports season is moving along rapidly and is about halfway over, so it's time to see where the Wildcats stand.

Several local teams are making playoff pushes, and while others have found struggles, there are still bright spots to be found.

So without further adieu, here's where Wilmington teams stand as of Tuesday night. The results were compiled based on the high school standings section of the Boston Globe's website.

It was a tough start for the boys basketball team, which lost its first three games of the year and But head coach Joe Maiella's charges bounced back nicely and have lost just once since.

The boys hoops team is tied with Stoneham atop Middlesex League Small School play. Both teams have a 3-1 league mark, though the , 60-50. Wilmington is 5-4 overall.

Jay Keane's girls basketball team is also tied for first place in league play, and has been solid throughout the campaign.

The year has included a second place finish in a Florida tournament and a to kick off the campaign. Keane's charges are 7-2 overall, and 3-1 in league play, good for a tie with Watertown, which boasts the same record in each area. The Lady Wildcats won the head to head meeting, 57-46.

It's been an interesting start to the season for the boys hockey team, but the bottom line is the Wildcats are alone first place in the Middlesex League.

Despite suspensions of key players for the first five games, the team and went 2-2-1 before returning to full strength.

Head coach Steve Scanlon's charges until two games ago with a 6-3 win over Melrose. The next and most recent tilt was another lopsided win, 3-0 over Wakefield, that vaulted the locals into first place and showed signs that the team could be finding its stride. The team is now 5-2-3 and 3-0-1 in league play.

The is 2-2 in league meets and 2-3 overall, and the sports the same mark. However, both are focused on the bigger picture as they seek to qualify as many athletes as possible for the upcoming state meet.

, but the young Wildcats earned a big boost on Saturday at Peabody. Joe McMahon's skaters snagged their first win of the year, a 4-1 road decision. The team is now 1-8 on the campaign.

Similarly, the . The team features just one senior and has struggled to a 1-4 overall record, 1-1 in Middlesex League meets. But the team is focused on improving and sustaining the program in upcoming years.
