Wildcats See Spike in Performance

Volleyball team sweeps to win over Watertown.

Wilmington girls volleyball team swept past Watertown on Monday night at the Watertown High School Gym, winning three consecutive sets in convincing fashion to improve to 2-4 on the year.

“We did better today than we have in the past games, we really made our past issues go away today, so hopefully we can run with that throughout the rest of the season,” said Wilmington head coach Meghan Sheehy.

Watertown dropped the first set 25-13, though the set was competitive early. The Raiders tied the set 9-9 on an ace before Wilmington rattled off 10 straight points to take the lead for good.

“We were playing against a good team, and I wouldn’t call it a step back, but it wasn’t a step forward either,” said Watertown head coach Maura Hamel. “It was more like we didn’t go anywhere.”

Wilmington picked up right where they left off in the second set, jumping out to a 5-0 lead before Watertown picked up it’s first points

“Volleyball is really a game of runs,” said Hamel. “When you’re on the wrong end of a run, it can fall apart pretty quickly.”

It was 11-2 when Hamel called a timeout to settle down her team. The timeout did not have the desired effect as Wilmington rattled off 11 straight points after the break to make the score 22-2 before knocking the ball just out of bounds and giving Watertown it’s first point since the match’s opening moments.

In the third and final set, Watertown jumped out to a 9-8 with some of it’s most competitive play yet in the match.

Wilmington’s strong serving and dominant net play wore down the less consistent Watertown squad, as Wilmington, staked to a 18-15 lead, went on a decisive 6-0 run to bring the set to a match point.

After a few late points by Watertown, the final score was 25-17 and a 3-0 match victory for Wilmington.
