Wilmington Coronavirus: AdviniaCare Becoming Recovery Hospital

The plan to convert the nursing home into a coronavirus hospital was announced March 31, before a coronavirus outbreak was found days later.

WILMINGTON, MA — Part of Wilmington's AdviniaCare nursing home is becoming a coronavirus treatment facility Thursday. The conversion is taking place more than three weeks after it was first announced, following a serious outbreak at the facility which infected the majority of residents and killed 36.

Part of the facility is becoming a recovery hospital, which means it will take in Massachusetts General Hospital patients who are recovering from the virus but still need a high level of care, like oxygen support.

According to Chris Hannon, the Chief Operating Officer of AdviniaCare's operator Pointe Group Care, an isolated unit of the facility is being converted.

“Working in close coordination with government partners, AdviniaCare Wilmington is opening today an isolated, dedicated unit for patients with Covid-19 who are being discharged from the hospital but are not yet ready to go home," Hannon said. "These patients will be isolated from the rest of the center. We look forward to helping these patients fully recover and get back to get back to their prior level of function and quality of life.”

The Board of Health will no longer share updates on case counts at AdviniaCare, because the recovering patients will be reported as cases in their towns of residence, Health Director Shelley Newhouse said.

According to the final update, the facility still has 22 active positive cases. Thirty-six residents died while 55 recovered.

CareOne, the town's other long-term care facility with an outbreak, has 43 positives, nine deaths, and 15 recoveries. Elsewhere in town, 46 residents have active cases and 10 are in quarantine for potential exposure. As of Monday's update, 39 had recovered.
