Wilmington Police Arrest Man Who Made Headlines For Exposing Self

John Gearty, 29, of Cambridge was arrested by MBTA Police during a 2017 snowstorm for dropping his pants and gyrating his hips.

WILMINGTON, MA -- Police arrested John Amaro Gearty, 31, of Cambridge on an outstanding warrant at 11:52 am on Friday. If that name sounds familiar, its because Gearty made headlines during a February 2017 snowstorm is which he was charged with dropping his pants on the platform of the MBTA's Ashmont T station.

MBTA police were called to the station by an employee at 4:30 pm during a snowstorm on February 12, 2017 for a complaint that Gearty was being loud and belligerent for no apparent reason. Gearty used foul language, police said, and made homophobic slurs directed at a MBTA employee. As an officer escorted Gearty from the station he stopped, dropped his pants and underwear and began to gyrate his body in front of MBTA customers.

Gearty was previously placed into protective custody by Wilmington Police in November 2015, according to the department's police log.
