Wilmington Would Start School Year With Half Days Under Proposal

Superintendent Glenn Brand has proposed the schedule change to the school committee.

WILMINGTON, MA -- Public school students in Wilmington would go to school for half days on the Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday before Labor Day under a proposal by Superintendent Glenn Brand. Under Brand's proposal, teachers would work full days on Aug. 27, 28 and 29 and those days would replace full days that had been traditionally set aside for curriculum development prior to the start of school.

Schools would be closed on Friday, allowing for a four-day weekend before students started full days of school on the Tuesday after the holiday.

"I like how the schedule eases in — a 3-day week, then a 4-day week, then a 5-day week," school committee member David Ragsdale said when Brand made his proposal to the board earlier this month. Other school committee members also indicated they would support the change.
