Woburn School Committee Sends Budget Hike Request To City Hall: Report

WOBURN, MA — The Woburn School Committee wants to hike funding for city education by 4 percent next year.

The budget submitted Monday to Mayor Michael Concannon comes in at just under $100 million, a $3.8 million increase over the current level, according to the Woburn Daily Times Chronicle.

The money would allow the school system to make five new hires, among other changes.

At the committee hearing, Concannon called the fiscal year 2027 numbers “a reasonably requested increase,” but made no promises about its prospects of approval. He and the City Council have the final say over the budget, as for every Woburn municipal department.

The city has approved larger increases in school funding over recent years. This year, the request is more modest, due partly to pushback around corresponding property tax jumps.

The budget submitted Monday is lower than a $100.4 million proposal drafted in March, the Times Chronicle reported.
