Goodyear School Open House Set for Oct. 2

And teachers' contract reportedly near approval.

An open house for the community will be held at the new on Oct. 2, a Sunday, from noon to 2 p.m. The school opened to students on the first day of school.

The School Committee scheduled the open house Tuesday night.

An official ribbon-cutting with officials from the state School Building Authority will be held at a different time. They were not available on Oct. 2. The city authorized a budget of $26.5 million for the new school. The city paid roughly $11 million. The state covered about 54 percent of the allowable costs.

The this past Thursday and several school projects are also on track—even ahead of schedule, school Supt. Mark Donovan told the committee, such as the . Workers on the Kennedy roof are not disturbing students during the school day, Donovan said; they work from 3 to 10 p.m.

A problem with phone service at the Goodyear is being addressed, Donovan said.

Several people who attended last night’s meeting said there are problems at an inactive city school:  the Two trees are losing large limbs, crates are blocking a door and the grass needs to be cut there, Ward 1 Ald. Rosa DiTucci told the School Committee.

Further, the modular classrooms there remain even though their lease has expired, and lights are on at the school.

The company that will remove the modular classrooms is focusing on getting modulars into place now, Donovan said. The modular removal process at the Clapp School will start Monday, he said. Permits are needed, he said. The city will not be charged for the portables after their two-year lease expired last month, Donovan told Woburn Patch. The portables were brought in to help house students from the “old” Goodyear School while the new Goodyear was built.

Teachers’ contract almost set

The committee’s Negotiations Subcommittee has endorsed a contract with city school teachers, committee and subcommittee member Denis Russell said Tuesday. The subcommittee is waiting for the teachers to endorse the contract, he said. He expects the full School Committee to vote on the contract at the committee’s next meeting, he said.

Security cameras at high school

At its next meeting, the School Committee will discuss spending $180,000 for more security cameras at the , to cover areas not covered now. Committee member Joseph Crowley said police Sgt. Paul Tenney has recommended the additional cameras. Some $150,000 is available in a building fund, Crowley said.

The committee ended its hour-and-20-minute public session with a vote to go into executive session to discuss contract negotiations with several groups of school employees, including nurses, cafeteria workers and secretaries.
