School's Out for the Summer (VIDEO)

Parents at the Altavesta School talk about the 'never-ending' school year and summer vacation.

Remember this past winter when school was cancelled yet again because of snow? This school year seemed to go on forever, according to a number of parents waiting to pick children up at noon on Monday at the . Monday marked the last day of school for most city schools.

“I never thought today would come,” said Kathy Zolubos, waiting for her son, who just completed third grade.

“We were in school forever,” said Leah DeMonico, whose daughter, Gianna, will start first grade in the fall. Woburn schools start later than other communities, she said.

With July less than a week away, Reenie Capozzi thought she might have her Fourth of July cookout at the school because she felt as if school might still be in session then.

“I hope Mother Nature is done being angry with you guys,” quipped Sarah Cooper, waiting for her son, Alex, who just completed second grade, and daughter, Jessica, who just completed fourth grade.

As for the winter and its precipitation, dad Jose DaSilva said his daughter, Sahra, loves snow, which she saw for the first time here, this year. Sahra, who’s just finished third grade, comes from Brazil.

Several parents said the highlight of their child’s school year was a field trip. A science museum in Acton and Wolf Hollow were two popular destinations, parents said.

The Cooper family from California has a different view.  They were wowed, mom Sarah said, that students here could express themselves in “whatever they excel in,” be it music, art, athletics or academics. Budget issues in California have meant severe cuts in school programs, she explained.

This summer, Talon Masotta will be going to Boy Scout Camp for the first time, Maryann Jonsson said of her grandson. He just finished first grade.

The whole family of Jane Raimundo, including Gabriella, who just finished second grade, plans to camp together for the first time, Jane said.

Reenie Capozzi’s daughter, who’ll be going into fourth grade in the fall, will attend the Recreation Department’s one-week soccer camp, according to mom.

The Coopers expect to spend time together, as a family, after the kids’ dad returned from a two-year deployment to Bahrain, mom Sarah Cooper said. They will also explore New England, she said.

You’ll find Mary Galindo and her family at the Ferullo Field pool, according to the mother of JJ, who just finished fourth grade, and Brian, who just finished grade one. Besides the pool, there’s a park, she said, a good ice cream shop, Mr. Charlie’s and a Dunkin Donuts just across the street.

The only school that did not end classes Monday was the . Students were to give teachers another day to prepare for the move this summer to the .
