2 Killed In Head-On Crash Along Route 49 In East Brookfield
The two victims from Worcester County died at the scene, and a third man was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
EAST BROOKFIELD, MA — Two people from Worcester County died Monday afternoon in a head-on collision along Route 49 in East Brookfield, according to state police.
According to state police, the victims were a 60-year-old man from Fitchburg and a 71-year-old from Leicester. A 28-year-old man who was a passenger in one of the vehicles was seriously injured and taken to a local hospital.
Police said the 60-year-old driving a Nissan SUV was traveling northbound around 12:30 p.m. when he crossed the center line and hit the pickup truck being driven by the 71-year-old. The crash happened around 12:30 p.m. near Flagg Road.

Police did not immediately say what may have caused the collision.
The collision shut down Route 49 for several hours due to an investigation. The state road runs north to south between Route 9 in Spencer and Route 20 in Charlton.

The Monday fatal accident was the second in Worcester County in recent days. On Saturday afternoon, a 59-year-old man from Hubbardston died when he collided with a semitrailer along Route 2 near Fitchburg. Police believe the victim may have suffered a medical emergency while driving.
