Due to a housing market in which rents exceed wages for those with moderate or limited incomes, Worcester County continues to see many homeless families. As a result of the pandemic, many families have become or are at imminent risk of becoming homeless, a trend that will likely continue for some time to come. The WALK for the Homeless concentrates efforts to raise funds and public awareness to support efforts that prevent homelessness. In addition to providing assistance to people who are ineligible for State-funded shelter, the program provides basic tools to help people move from homelessness to stability, such as furniture and household goods to make their housing feel like home.
The WALK for the Homeless supports a continuum of innovative services. Proceeds will benefit the programs of the Central Massachusetts Housing Alliance addressing or preventing homelessness including: the Donations Clearinghouse, Homelessness Prevention Services, and Youth Against Homelessness. The WALK will also benefit the homelessness programs of Friendly House including In the Hour of Need Family Shelter (IHN).

According to Leah Bradley, Chief Executive Officer of the Central Massachusetts Housing Alliance, “We have seen firsthand the impact that homelessness has had on families, especially the children, who have experienced multiple moves, are living in basements of family/friends or in overcrowded conditions. Our goal is not only to help these families but to reduce the impacts on their children. We need our communities support now more than ever.”
