Up To $5 Grand To Nab Person Who Dumped Puppies In River

A kayaker heard whimpers coming from a bag floating down the Blackstone River, and authorities want to find the person responsible.

WORCESTER COUNTY, MA—A person kayaking down the Blackstone River on Sept. 21 heard whimpers coming from a bag he saw floating near him. It was about 100 yards south of Unitrans Transportation on River Road and the kayaker managed to grab it before it went under water. The discovery was surprising and horrifying.

Inside were six, one-week-old, puppies, all still living. The kayaker called police. And today the dogs are recovering at an animal shelter.

Now authorities really want to know who did this.

Police are investigating but have yet to make any arrests in connection to this case, which is why PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that "animals are not ours to abuse in any way"—is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this crime.

"It takes a disturbing lack of empathy to pack six newborn puppies into a bag and drop them in a river to drown," said PETA Vice President Colleen O'Brien in a statement. "Whoever did this is dangerous, and PETA urges anyone with information about this case to come forward immediately so that the perpetrator can be stopped from hurting anyone else."

Anyone who recognizes the puppies in the image above or knows of a dog in the area who was pregnant is encouraged to call the Uxbridge Police Department at 508-278-7755.
