WORCESTER, MA — Amazon is marching ahead with an expansion in Worcester announcing Tuesday that it will open a delivery station in a warehouse near Worcester Regional Airport.

An Amazon spokesperson said the 177,000 square-foot Goddard Memorial Drive delivery station will employ hundreds of people. The warehouse was previously owned by electronics distributor TE Connectivity, and was purchased in October for $7.2 million by Burlington-based Goddard Memorial Drive Owner LLC.

Larger Amazon fulfillment centers send packages to delivery stations for sorting, and then van drivers pick up the packages and deliver them to homes. The jobs at the Worcester delivery station will pay $15 per-hour to start, according to the company. The company as of Tuesday night had not advertised any job openings for the new delivery station.

Amazon is also set to open a distribution center at the site of the Greendale Mall. The mall's owner plans to demolish the 380,000 square-foot building to construct a 121,000 square-foot distribution center for the e-commerce company.

Amazon is also launching two new sorting centers in Northborough and Milford, where it already operates a delivery station.
