Amherst College Shelter-In-Place Lifted After Person Found

The school said police are searching for a "potentially suicidal person with a gun."

AMHERST, MA — Amherst College was under a shelter-in-place order for nearly two hours Wednesday night while police searched for a "potentially suicidal person with a gun," the school said.

The school urged students to "take shelter in a locked building until further notice" around 9:30 p.m. The school said Amherst Police found the person later in the evening, but did not detail if the person was armed.

Local, school and state police were searching the woods south of campus. The school said the person is not believe to be affiliated with Amherst College.
