The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is performing bridge preservation and rehabilitation on the Ararat Street Bridge over I-90 in Worcester. The work, which is set to begin on May 1, will result in a new deck and asphalt service and is meant to extend the life of the bridge.

Starting May 1, eastbound traffic will be detoured. The detour is expected to remain in place through August 2026.

At the same time, pedestrian access and westbound traffic will remain open across the bridge during construction. Local access to residences and businesses will also be maintained.

The detour route will direct drivers to turn right onto Frontage Road South, continue straight, follow signs to Shore Drive, turn left onto Shore Drive, turn left onto Frontage Road North, and continue straight to reconnect with Ararat Street.

MassDOT is recommending drivers to follow all posted detour signs, allow extra travel time, use caution when traveling through the area, and be mindful of construction crews and equipment.
