WORCESTER, MA — The Worcester man who was killed in a car crash earlier this week is being remembered by family and friends as a “hero.”
James M. McGuire died after being struck by a vehicle on Hope Avenue in Worcester on Sunday night, police said. The 61-year-old was a former firefighter who worked in Princeton, Spencer and Rutland, according to his obituary.
Officers responded to the area near 137 Hope Ave. at about 9:16 p.m. Sunday after Worcester Police Communications received a report of a pedestrian crash.

McGuire was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries, police said. A preliminary investigation found he was attempting to cross the street when he was hit by the vehicle.
A lifelong Worcester resident, McGuire graduated from Worcester Vocational Technical High School in 1983, according to his obituary. He served as a firefighter for many years and later worked in EMS before eventually joining the Department of Developmental Services, where he worked in group homes throughout Worcester County.
"James was also known for his love of service, whether battling fires as a firefighter, ensuring safety and support as an EMT, bringing love and care to those who just needed a little help in everyday living, or simply sharing a story and a hearty laugh to brighten the day. James was a father who deeply loved his family, and was always there when they needed him the most," his obiturary states. "He was a hero in the world, and hero at home, and now he rests alongside his heroes."
Services for McGuire will be held on Friday, May 15.
