FITCHBURG, MA —A popular restaurant has officially opened its newest location in Central Massachusetts.
Tavern in the Square celebrated its opening in Fitchburg this week. The eatery, known for its American fare, draft beer, and sports-bar atmosphere, celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting on Monday attended by local and state leaders.
“Huge thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate opening day with us,” the restaurant wrote in a social media post on Monday. “And the biggest thank you goes to our Fitchburg team, who poured countless hours into bringing this restaurant to life. They’re the heart of this place, and none of this would be possible without them.”
The Fitchburg restaurant is at the site of the former Singapore Restaurant in Twin City Plaza, according to a November 2025 Fitchburg city newsletter announcing the project. That newsletter said Tavern in the Square planned to redevelop the property at 170 Whalon St. into a new restaurant and bar.
The location features a spacious dining area with indoor and outdoor bar seating for over 150 guests, a large central bar, and a beautiful outdoor patio on the South Side.
“This will be a major win for Fitchburg’s dining scene and another exciting step forward for growth along Whalon Street, this plaza and the City of Fitchburg as a whole,” the newsletter stated.
Tavern in the Square operates 21 locations in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island, including another location in Worcester County, Shrewsbury.
