Worcester After-School Sports Get Boost From District Attorney Early

WORCESTER, MA — Worcester Public Schools' sixth-graders will get more after-school sports opportunities through a new donation from Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early.

Early donated $15,000 to support after-school baseball clinics for sixth-grade students at Worcester East Middle School, Union Hill School, Belmont Street Community School, Grafton Street School and Clark Street Community School, WPS said Monday.

The district said Early has also provided uniforms, equipment and volunteers for the clinics. WPS plans to expand the program this fall with additional after-school opportunities through soccer.

The donation comes as Worcester schools have been adding more middle-grade athletics. In May, WPS announced a partnership with the Play Ball Foundation to fund after-school sports leagues, including support for coaches, equipment, uniforms and transportation.

DA Early’s office has previously described youth programming as part of its crime prevention work.

In 2022, the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office said its Drug Forfeiture Community Reinvestment program had supported youth programs, summer sports leagues and school athletic equipment across Worcester County.
