WORCESTER, MA — Worcester police will use a department drone to check the area before the city's Independence Day fireworks display Thursday.

Police said the drone will be used to review staging areas and nearby locations from above to identify possible public safety concerns before the event begins.

Members of the public may notice the drone operating in the area before the fireworks display, police said. The department said the operation is strictly for public safety purposes.

The celebration will include live music, family activities and fireworks with synchronized music at 9:30 p.m.

Patch's Fourth of July guide lists Worcester's Annual Independence Day Celebration as one of the city's holiday events, along with a 4th of July Family Fest at Polar Park. The holiday marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
