FITCHBURG, MA — The Central Massachusetts community is remembering a longtime first responder whose ties to the Fitchburg Fire Department stretched back generations.
Fitchburg Deputy Fire Chief Patrick James “PJ” Roy, an active-duty firefighter and beloved community member, died Wednesday at the Rose Monahan Hospice Home in Worcester. He was 45.
Roy joined the Fitchburg Fire Department on Nov. 21, 2006, and had served as deputy chief for the past three years. He also served with the Ashby Fire Department.
“Since the day he was sworn in, PJ has placed the safety and well-being of our residents above all else,” the Fitchburg Fire Department said on Wednesday. “The passing of PJ will leave a large void in our Department and our Community. He is loved by all and will truly be missed.”
Firefighting was a family tradition for Roy. His grandfather, Verne, joined the department in 1947, followed by Roy’s father, Jimmy; his uncle Kevin; his cousin Andrew; and his brother Sean, according to the department.
"Throughout his career, he was known for his dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to protecting and serving his community," his obituary reads. "Firefighting was truly his passion."
Roy's funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 15, at Our Lady of the Lake Church, 1400 Main St., Leominster, followed by burial in St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Fitchburg.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, in the Fitchburg High School Auditorium, 140 Arn-How Farm Road.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fitchburg Fire Community, mailed to 33 North St., Fitchburg. The Isabelle & Anderson Funeral Home in Fitchburg is assisting the family with arrangements.
