Another Water Chestnut Pull Planned At Lake Quinsigamond

SHREWSBURY, MA — Volunteers will get another chance this month to help remove an invasive plant from Lake Quinsigamond.

The City of Worcester is seeking volunteers for a water chestnut pull from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 25, meeting at Gauch Park, 61 Main St. in Shrewsbury. The effort aims to remove water chestnut, an invasive aquatic weed that can crowd out native plants and reduce biodiversity.

Water chestnut can form dense mats that displace native species and interfere with recreation, according to the National Invasive Species Information Center.

On June 27, volunteers came together for a similar event. The city has also promoted similar volunteer pulls at other local waterways this summer, including Coes Reservoir.

A limited number of kayaks will be available to people who register first. Volunteers can RSVP here.

Water chestnut was identified in several areas of Lake Quinsigamond in 2021, prompting community hand-pulling events, according to a 2023 Lake Quinsigamond water quality report. The report said the invasive plant was most abundant in the Round Pond area but also appeared along northern edges of the lake.
