WORCESTER, MA — The Worcester community is remembering a longtime civic leader.
Robert M. "Bob" Kennedy, who spent 12 years guiding Mechanics Hall, died on Jul. 25. He led the historic downtown concert venue until his retirement in 2018.
During his tenure, he worked to expand community access to Mechanics Hall, including opportunities for young musicians to perform in the landmark venue. The historic hall said it mourns Kennedy's passing.
"Bob's leadership, dedication, and commitment to this historic building helped strengthen Mechanics Hall's connection with the Worcester community while preserving its legacy for future generations," Mechanics Hall wrote in a social media statement. "We extend our deepest condolences to Bob's family."
Kennedy has a long history in the city, as he was born in Worcester, according to his obituary. He later graduated from Leicester High School and The College of the Holy Cross, and earned his Master's degree from Boston College.
Kennedy was also recognized by Worcester Youth Orchestras, which established the "Robert Kennedy Community Service Award" in his honor in 2018. The organization said Kennedy was a major supporter of young people across Central Massachusetts and worked to ensure they could perform at Mechanics Hall.
"We extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to his wife Mary and all his family during this time," Worcester Youth Orchestras wrote in a social media announcement. "On behalf of all the WYO staff, students and alumni, thank you, Bob."
In 2018, the Worcester County Mechanics Association also presented Kennedy with its "Master Mechanic Award," which recognizes contributions to innovation, philanthropy and the cultural vitality of Central Massachusetts.
The organization also created the Bob Kennedy Legacy Fund upon his retirement.
Family and friends were invited to services on Tuesday. More information is available here.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Bob may be made to the Jewish Healthcare Center, 629 Salisbury St. or The Worcester Youth Orchestra, P.O. Box 991.
