Worcester To Hold Next Household Hazardous Waste Day: Here's When

Residents will have an opportunity to safely dispose of hazardous materials that have been accumulating in their homes, garages and yards.

WORCESTER, MA — Worcester residents will have an opportunity to safely dispose of hazardous materials that have been accumulating in their homes, garages and yards.

The city will hold its next Household Hazardous Waste Day from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Sept. 2, at the Residential Drop-Off Center, 1065 Millbury St. Residents must schedule an appointment online before attending.

Accepted car-related materials include gasoline, kerosene, antifreeze, brake fluid, engine degreaser and car wax. Motor oil will not be accepted.

Residents may also bring household cleaners, furniture polish, photo chemicals, swimming pool chemicals and aerosol cans that are not empty. Empty aerosol cans should be placed in a yellow municipal trash bag.

Lawn and garden materials accepted at the event include poisons, insecticides, fungicides, chemical fertilizers, weed killer, mothballs, driveway sealer and charcoal lighter fluid.

The city will also accept oil-based paints, stains, varnishes, paint thinner, solvents, wood preservatives and roofing tar. Latex paint will not be accepted.

Other prohibited items include empty containers, smoke detectors, household batteries, prescription medicines, ammunition, fireworks, explosives, tires, asbestos, propane tanks and commercial or industrial waste.

Sharps will not be collected at the event. The city recommends using designated sharps containers marked with the universal biohazard symbol. Drop-off locations are available through the appointment and information page.
