Over 1,000 Backpacks For Local Kids After Worcester Fundraiser

WORCESTER, MA — A school-supply drive organized by the Worcester County Sheriff's Office will help about 1,000 local children prepare for the new school year.

The Backpacks & Bright Futures event raised nearly $10,000 for backpacks and school supplies to distribute to children across the Greater Worcester area, according to the Worcester County Sheriff's Office. The office organized the drive with the Worcester County Reserve Deputy Sheriff's Association.

Nearly 100 people joined Sheriff Lew Evangelidis and the office's comfort dog, Milo, at Off The Rails in Worcester on Wednesday.

Attendees were asked to contribute a new backpack, school supplies or a $25 donation. The fundraiser received support from community partners, businesses, nonprofit groups, elected officials, sheriff's office employees and residents.

The sheriff's office said it will distribute the backpacks and supplies to local students ahead of the school year.
