Millbrook Street Bridge Work To Bring Long-Term Detour In Worcester

WORCESTER, MA — Eastbound traffic on the Millbrook Street bridges will be detoured beginning Sept. 14 as a long-term rehabilitation project moves forward.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation will repair the Millbrook Street bridges over I-190 southbound and the railroad. The first phase is expected to continue through spring 2027, according to a MassDOT notice.

The project includes steel repairs and painting, bridge deck repairs, joint reconstruction, roadway and sidewalk work and other structural and safety upgrades. The work is intended to extend the bridges' life and improve long-term roadway conditions.

Eastbound drivers will be directed to turn right onto Gold Star Boulevard, loop around to West Boylston Street, bear left at the "I-290 Auburn-Shrewsbury" sign, take Exit 1 to I-290 east and use Exit 23 to Burncoat Street.

Westbound traffic and pedestrian access will remain open across the bridges during all phases of construction. Access to nearby homes and businesses will also be maintained.

MassDOT advised drivers to follow posted detour signs, allow extra travel time and consider alternate routes during peak travel periods. The eastbound detour is expected to remain in place throughout construction.

Another Worcester Bridge Detour

The Millbrook Street closure will begin while an eastbound detour remains in place at the Ararat Street Bridge over I-190.

Construction on that bridge began May 1 and the eastbound detour is expected to continue through October.

Eastbound Ararat Street drivers are being directed onto Frontage Road South, Shore Drive and Frontage Road North before reconnecting with Ararat Street. Westbound traffic has remained open, along with pedestrian access and access to nearby homes and businesses.
