Worcester Schools To Launch Anti-Racism Campaign After Athletic Incidents

WORCESTER, MA — Worcester Public Schools will bring together students and public officials next week to formally launch a districtwide campaign against racism.

Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell and U.S. Rep. James McGovern will join students from all Worcester public high schools for the Stand Against Racism campaign launch from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Tuesday in the auditorium at Doherty Memorial High School, 299 Highland St.

The district created the campaign in response to racist incidents targeting student athletes at away games, according to Worcester Public Schools.

Students attending the assembly will recite the campaign pledge and hear remarks from Campbell, McGovern and a student speaker.

Mayor Joseph Petty, Superintendent Brian Allen, YWCA of Central Massachusetts CEO Deborah Hall and NAACP Worcester President Fred Taylor are also scheduled to speak.

Allen introduced the campaign at the beginning of the school year before its formal launch, according to the district. The initiative is a collaboration between Worcester Public Schools, the YWCA of Central Massachusetts and the NAACP Worcester.
