WORCESTER, MA — Two Worcester Railers employees gave back to the community by supporting local families this week.
Community Relations Coordinator Griffin King and Manager of Ticket Sales Josh DeMaio selected Friendly House for the Railers' Month of Giving program. The pair donated $2,000 and volunteered at the Worcester nonprofit's food pantry Wednesday morning.
Friendly House is a Worcester nonprofit founded as a settlement house in 1920. The organization supports underserved residents through youth programs, emergency shelter, transitional housing, social services and assistance with needs such as immigration, translation and public benefits.
Its food security programs provide Worcester families with regular and emergency access to fresh produce, milk, meat, shelf-stable food and baby formula. Friendly House operates food pantries at 36 Wall St. and the Quinsigamond Village Community Center at 200 Greenwood St.
King and DeMaio checked in arriving families and organized bags of food for them to take home, according to the Railers.
During the Railers Month of Giving, each full-time employee selects a Central Massachusetts nonprofit to receive a $1,000 donation from the Worcester Railers Foundation. Participating organizations support causes including health care, education, youth hockey, court services and assistance for people experiencing homelessness.
The program also includes a hands-on component. Railers employees volunteer with their selected nonprofits, allowing staff members to support the organizations' work in addition to making financial contributions.
