Costco is preparing a major expansion as plans for a new warehouse in Massachusetts move through local review.
The massive, membership-only warehouse club plans to open 33 locations during fiscal 2027, including five relocations, Costco CEO Ron Vachris said, according to The Hill.
A Massachusetts location could be one of the 33 new locations.
The proposed warehouse at 21 Coslin Dr. in Southborough would include a roughly 167,000-square-foot warehouse and a gas station with 15 pumps, according to documents filed with the Southborough Planning Board.
The Coslin Drive property covers about 26 acres in Southborough and Westborough. The warehouse would be located in Southborough, while part of the parking area would extend into Westborough, according to the town.
The proposal remains subject to local review, and Costco has not publicly confirmed that the Southborough warehouse is one of the 33 openings planned for fiscal 2027. Town officials previously projected a summer 2027 opening, but the latest estimate calls for the store to open in late 2027 or early 2028, according to My Southborough.
The Southborough Planning Board opened its public hearing on the project Sept. 28. Reviews of traffic, landscaping, lighting, stormwater systems, utilities and the proposed fuel facility are expected to continue into 2027.
Costco operated 939 warehouses worldwide at the end of fiscal 2026. The company plans four openings in Europe, five in Canada and one in Mexico during fiscal 2027, Vachris said. Costco expects to spend about $7.5 billion during the fiscal year as it expands its warehouse and supply chain network.
Costco operates seven Massachusetts warehouses in Avon, Danvers, Dedham, Everett, Sharon, Waltham and West Springfield, according to its warehouse directory.
The store also plans to open 14 new locations across the U.S. this month and in November.
