WORCESTER, MA — Worcester police will receive nearly $60,000 in federal funding for traffic safety initiatives.
The Worcester Police Department was awarded $59,649 through the Municipal Road Safety Grant Program, the state announced Friday. The award is part of $13 million in federal traffic safety funding distributed to police departments across Massachusetts.
The program provides local departments with funding for traffic enforcement, pedestrian and bicyclist safety efforts, equipment, officer training and public education.
The money comes from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and is administered by the state Executive Office of Public Safety and Security's Office of Grants and Research.
"We want to make Massachusetts roads the safest they can be for residents, families, workers and everyone who travels through our communities," Gov. Maura Healey said. "These investments will give police departments the enforcement tools, training, technology and resources they need to prevent crashes before they happen, address dangerous driving and ultimately save lives."
Worcester police did not immediately respond to a request for details about how the department plans to use the funding.
