WORCESTER, MA — Worcester State University President Barry Maloney will lead one of the city's largest annual cultural celebrations next spring.
Maloney has been selected as grand marshal of the 45th annual Worcester County St. Patrick's Parade, scheduled for noon Sunday, March 14, 2027, on Park Avenue, Worcester State University announced last week.
The parade committee considers nominees' community contributions and Irish roots when selecting a grand marshal, according to the university. Maloney is a fourth-generation Irish American whose family traces its roots to County Clare and County Cork.
During the past decade, Maloney has helped Worcester State establish academic relationships with Atlantic Technological University, Ulster University and the University of Limerick. Those partnerships bring Irish students and delegations to Worcester while allowing Worcester State students to study nursing, environmental studies and literature in Ireland and Northern Ireland, according to the university.
Worcester State also formalized a five-year partnership with the University of Limerick earlier this year , creating a path for Worcester students to pursue graduate degrees at the Irish university.
The parade is expected to run from noon to 3 p.m. on Park Avenue, according to the Worcester County St. Patrick's Parade Committee. The committee will also hold a grand marshal banquet from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Jan. 30 at St. Spyridon Cathedral.
