WORCESTER, MA — A new sensory room funded by the Worcester Police Department is now available to families at the Autism Resource Center.

Police Chief Paul Saucier and several officers attended a dedication for the room last week at the center, located at 712 Plantation St. The space was funded through the department's annual sale of autism-awareness patches, according to Worcester police.

Each April, officers can purchase the special patches and wear them on their uniforms during Autism Awareness Month. Proceeds from the sales were donated to the center to create the new room.

The room provides a welcoming space where people can make art, explore their interests and participate in activities while regulating sensory input, according to the Police Department.

The Autism Resource Center provides education, family activities, referrals and support to children and families affected by autism in Central Massachusetts. The center has served the region since 1996, according to Advocates.

The Plantation Street facility serves children and adults.

The Autism Resource Center said its incredibly grateful to the police department for sponsoring the room.

"Your generosity helps us create a welcoming, inclusive space where individuals can explore interests, read, make art, and engage in activities in a sensory-friendly environment," the center wrote in a Wednesday announcement. "We appreciate your support and commitment to making a positive difference for individuals with autism and their families throughout our community."
