Dangerous Bacteria At Worcester Beach Forces Closure
On one of the hottest days of the year, high E. coli levels were detected at a busy Worcester swimming spot.
WORCESTER, MA — The city of Worcester closed Binienda Memorial Beach at Coes Pond on Tuesday after high levels of E. coli bacteria were detected in the water.
The closure comes on one of the hottest days of the year so far, and with limited public swimming options in the Worcester area. The beach will remain closed until the bacteria levels drop, city officials said.
John J. Binienda Memorial Beach at Coes Pond is closed today due to high E. coli bacteria sample results. Park staff will ensure visitors to the beach to not use the water. The beach will remain closed until additional laboratory tests indicate acceptable bacteria levels.

All other Worcester beaches, including at Indian Lake and Shore Park, appeared to still be open on Tuesday. The Greenwood spray park closed over the weekend due to an equipment malfunction, but reopened on Monday.
The Crompton Park Pool is open, but operating in a reduced capacity due to the coronavirus pandemic.
