About the Book
In Book Two of the Discovery Chronicles, readers meet Peter and Rosemary Grant, married biologists who spent forty years studying families of finches on a small and hard-to-reach uninhabited island off the coast of South America. Their meticulous approach to understanding these birds is the stuff of legend—capturing hundreds of birds twice each year, precisely measuring their beaks, wings, and bodies, banding them, and recording all of it. As their detailed data on the finches expands, so does their understanding of how the finches came to be … and, in turn, how we ourselves came to be.
About the Author
Loree Griffin Burns is a scientist-turned-writer specializing in stories that celebrate our natural world and the people who study it. While researching her award-winning science books for children, she has beachcombed on both coasts, cruised the Pacific in search of plastic, surveyed birds in Central Park, stung herself with a honey bee, visited the wintering grounds of the monarch butterfly (on horseback!), lived on an uninhabited volcanic island in Iceland, and spent the wee hours of an entire summer of evenings studying the moths in her backyard. She is the creator, with illustrator Jamie Green, of a brand-new early chapter book series celebrating the how of science. One Long Line is out now, and Extreme Birdwatching comes out in spring 2026.

In honor of National Poetry Month and Jazz Appreciation Month, join us for our fourth – hopefully-annual! – Spine Poems and Jazz Night! Create a Spine Poem and listen to music provided by Nat Needle with WICN Colors of Jazz host Bonnie Johnson! We will use Annette Dauphin Simon's fabulous book <a href="https://tidepoolbookshop.com/book/9780063208223" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Spine Poems: An Eclectic Collection of Found Verse for Book Lovers</a> as the model for creating our own short verses using the spines of books here at the bookstore. "Writing" a spine poem is fun, it's quick (~5 minutes, unless you start reading the books), it's easy. In fact, they pretty much write themselves!
Bonnie Johnson is an innovative design thinker, radio personality and public speaker. She is producer and on-air host of Colors of Jazz, a weekly program streaming live online at the NPR affiliate station 90.5 WICN. In addition to positioning herself in media as a jazz presenter, Bonnie is a content creator, podcast producer and data engineer. Stealth in her track record of advancing the cultural exchange, Bonnie delivers STEM leadership, and seeks to find pathways for collaboration through the lens of music and social justice.

 Live Bullet, “New England’s most authentic tribute to Bob Seger,” comes to Murphy’s Taproom &amp; Carriage House, 393 State Route 101 in Bedford, New Hampshire on Friday, April 17.
Since 2010, Live Bullet has rocked sold out shows with their high energy concert performances playing hours of Bob Seger's greatest hits. Unlike many tributes, Live Bullet focuses on capturing the live energy of Seger’s music, performing the "live versions" from the albums "Live Bullet" and "Nine Tonight" plus many other fan favorites and deep cuts.
Tickets are $45, available only online, and capacity is limited.
Doors open at 7:30 for the 8:30 p.m. show. Make early reservations for dinner at the restaurant.
