<p>Join a New England forester on a fifty-year quest for something larger than all of us. Here are a series of essays, stories and poems emerging from the natural world, but always connected to a life that has had its common share of illumination and darkness, hope and despair, love and loss, ambition and failure, resistance and acceptance, anger and peace. Marking timber for harvest becomes a meditation on the unique connection between responsibility to the natural world and awareness of self and others. A shadow in the woods, a voice on the wind opens up the mystery inherent in all the wisdom traditions. The impact of a sudden death on a logging crew lingers for decades, demanding a resolution between hubris and fate. The crushing retreat of the United States from climate science and advocacy manifests in a longing for the precise language of another time when we were closer to the natural cycles of life.</p>
<p><strong>About the Author</strong></p>
<p>Bob formed a deep connection to the natural world very early in life, beginning a journey that continues today. His experiences in nature have shaped his thinking, expanded his awareness, and offered him new perspectives. To better understand them, Bob studied psychology and wisdom traditions and integrated these insights into a new leadership model in forestry and large-scale land conservation.</p>
<p>Currently, as a speaker and author, he is dedicated to promoting a bioeconomy that emphasizes the construction of tall buildings using engineered wood. His work focuses on replacing materials with high fossil fuel content, such as plastic, steel, and concrete, with sustainably sourced and climate-resilient forest products. Bob lives in an oak forest on the north shore of the island of Martha’s Vineyard.</p>

<p>The daily struggles Adam Clarke faces are enough to split him in two. His genuine identity as a young man who endeavors to make those around him happy, as a compassionate care worker who goes above and beyond in his profession and as a loving son, pitted against his scatterbrain state of mind, addictions, and his deep self-loathing.<br><br>Against the advice of doctors and his grade-school teachers, Adam’s mother chose not to medicate her son’s debilitating ADHD. As a result of her decision, Adam begins to self-medicate his problematic impulsiveness and overwhelming urges. Now twenty-three and guilty of a horrific accident, Adam is about to lose the only thing he has left, his freedom. He must decide to give up on himself or fight for a better life on the other side.</p>

<p>Jennifer Shaw Cronin, author <em>Under the Hidden Moon </em>and now <em>Beneath the Turmoil, </em>has spent more than forty years working in the animal care field. Alongside her professional career, she enjoys writing stories that explore resilience and hope, CrossFit and hiking with her dog. She volunteers at the local animal shelter, serves as a library trustee and continues to champion causes close to her heart. The company's own website advertises "large canine colonies ready for study starts" and "in vivo" drug testing services at this address.</div><div dir="auto"></div><div dir="auto">In vivo testing means live animals are dosed with pharmaceutical compounds, monitored, and killed so their organs can be examined.</div><div dir="auto"></div><div dir="auto">Charles River is a documented buyer of beagles from Marshall BioResources, the nation's largest commercial beagle breeding facility, which has accumulated more than 20 federal Animal Welfare Act violations since 2007. The supply chain is established: Marshall breeds them, Charles River buys them, pharmaceutical companies pay for the studies, and the dogs are killed.</div><div dir="auto"></div><div dir="auto">Massachusetts law prohibits exactly this outcome. The Beagle Bill, signed into law in 2022, requires research facilities to offer healthy dogs and cats for adoption once their research use ends. Charles River circumvents this requirement by mandating necropsy — requiring that all dogs be killed and dissected at study's end — thereby eliminating any legal obligation to offer them for adoption. The spirit and intent of Massachusetts law is being systematically exploited by one of the most profitable contract research organizations in the world, operating in plain sight in downtown Worcester.</div><div dir="auto"></div><div dir="auto">Charles River is currently under civil and criminal investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice for violations of federal monkey importation laws. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is separately investigating the company for misleading shareholders about its animal supply chain. The FDA has announced a plan to phase out animal testing requirements, calling animal models an unreliable predictor of human outcomes — with more than 90 percent of drugs that pass animal studies failing in human clinical trials.</div><div dir="auto"></div><div dir="auto">The science is broken. The law is being ignored. The animals are dying. And most Worcester residents have no idea any of it is happening inside a downtown address they pass every day.</div><div dir="auto"></div><div dir="auto">That ends now.</div><div dir="auto"></div><div dir="auto">Advocates are calling on Charles River Laboratories to immediately cease dog and cat&nbsp;experimentation at the Worcester facility, adopt out all current research dogs and cats to approved rescue organizations, and end its commercial relationship with Marshall BioResources.</div><div dir="auto"></div><div dir="auto">Animal lovers, concerned citizens, animal welfare advocates, members of the press and all groups or organizations opposing animal testing are invited to join the protest.</div><div dir="auto"></div><div dir="auto">All individuals are welcome. Born out of audience participation, those attending in costume would get out of their seats and act out parts of the film in front of the movie screen. This organic expression of the film’s central theme (Don’t dream it, be it) evolved into full casts of actors performing along with the cult classic and interacting with audiences to create a unique experience with each viewing. Over time, the art of shadowcasting has grown, bringing this unparalleled style of entertainment to audiences world wide. Today, while the <em>Rocky Horror Picture Show</em> is still the most shadowcasted film, others (such as <em>Grease</em>, <em>Repo! The Genetic Opera</em>, <em>The Princess Bride</em> and many more) have made their way into theaters to the delight of audiences.</p>
