Cyclists Pedal To Honor Worcester EMT Who Died From Hep C, Contracted When A Patient Bit Him

The cyclists made their first stop from Boston to Virginia in Worcester.

WORCESTER, MA—More than a hundred cyclists from across the country landed at St. Vincent's Hospital on Saturday, the first stop in a ride that extends from Boston to Arlington, VA.

The cyclists, from Worcester EMS and UMass Memorial Medical Center, are making the journey in honor of John Lynch, an EMT in Worcester who contracted Hepatitis C after being bitten by a patient he was trying to save, reports Fox 25 Boston.

Lynch died last December at age 60 due to complications from hepatitis C.

He worked for the Emergency Medical Service at UMass Memorial and also served on the regional emergency medical assistance team, as well as served as an EMT for the state, according to the Worcester Telegram and Gazette.

Lynch received a liver and kidney transplant in 1984, and retired from his position in 1997, and also advocated for organ donation.
