Driver Charged In Deadly Route 20 Crash ID'd

The driver ran away from the crash and tried hiding in the woods from police.

AUBURN, MA — The Worcester District Attorney's Office identified the driver being charged in Thursday afternoon's deadly three-car crash that shut down Route 20 in Auburn for hours. The DA's office said DeJesus Amaro, 24, of Taunton, was held on $50,000 bail following his arraignment on Friday, on nine charges including motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation

At about 1:45 p.m on Thursday, Amaros was driving a Ford Explorer and crossed the double-yellow line on Washington Street and hit a Toyota Tacoma and Jeep Grand Cherokee in the opposite lane. The driver of the Toyota was not injured but the driver and passenger of the Jeep were both injured. They were taken to the UMass-Memorial Medical Center in Worcester and the passenger was pronounced dead.

The Worcester County DA's office identified the passenger as Michael Robidoux, 54, of Auburn. The driver is still hospitalized.

Police said after causing the fatal crash, Amaro ran from the scene into nearby woods. Mass State Police Air Wing and K9 unit helped Auburn police find and arrest him.

Amaro had outstanding warrants and was injured in the crash. He was taken into custody at UMass.

The nine charges are as follows: leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash after causing personal injury and death; operating a motor vehicle negligently while under the influence of drugs and causing serious injury; motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation; leaving the scene of property damage; using a motor vehicle without authority; possession of an open container of alcohol in public; unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle; marked lanes violation; speeding. He also was arrested on two warrants from another jurisdiction.
