Demo Of Piccadilly Plaza In Worcester For Starbucks, Bank

WORCESTER, MA — An iconic shopping plaza along Shrewsbury Street in Worcester may soon meet its end, according to plans submitted recently to the Conservation Commission.

Franklin-based American East Coast II LLC has submitted plans to tear down an office building on the east side of the 490 Shrewsbury St. site, and an accessory building that houses a Terra Brasilis restaurant.

The buildings would be replaced with a drive-thru Starbucks along Shrewsbury Street, a bank where Terra Brasilis is located and a new commercial building at the top of the site along Belmont Street.

"The property includes 2.12 acres in total area and is currently occupied by a single-story restaurant building and a two-story multi-use commercial building that total 15,831 square-feet in total area. The redevelopment of the site proposes to remove the existing buildings and site improvements to construct a new 5,032 square-foot bank with drive-thru, 2,225 square-foot Starbucks restaurant with drive-thru and 3,000 square-foot retail building along with paved parking areas, landscaping, utility connections, and other associated site improvements," the development application says.

Piccadilly Plaza — previously home to a Piccadilly Pub restaurant — sold in December 2020 for $3.2 million. The previous owner was Fort Lauderdale, Fla.,-based WCM Enterprises, according to the Worcester County Registry of Deeds.

The 1987 plaza straddles a triangular piece of land between Belmont and Shrewsbury streets.

The Conservation Commission will meet Monday to discuss the project.
