Driver Suffers Injuries After Dump Truck Hits Worcester Bridge
A driver from sutton struck the Providence and Worcester Railroad Bridge, causing damage and injuries.
WORCESTER, MA — A truck driver suffered injuries after he struck a bridge with his dumptruck on Monday.
Police responded on May 9 around 2:20 a.m. to the area of 382 Southbridge St., which is the Providence-Worcester railroad bridge. A vehicle had struck the bridge, causing extensive damage to the 2008 Kentworth dump truck. The body of the dumptruck hit the bridge in an upward position, and it caused it to separate from the tractor, flipping the tractor onto its side.The dump body got entangled with the catwalk on the side of the bridge, along with the attached conduit pipes with fiber optics and electrical cables.
The driver, a 33-year-old Sutton resident, suffered from neck, back and chest pain; he was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Investigators found that he had been driving north on Southbridge Street after making a delivery to a nearby yard and forgot to lower the dump body after that delivery.
As a result of the extensive damage to the bridge and the dump truck Southbridge Street was shut down. Bridge inspectors were called to the scene to conduct an extensive inspection of the damage areas. Trains were halted or diverted as the bridge was closed to all railroad traffic, said police.
This investigation is ongoing; investigators will be issuing several citations to the operator.
