Dunkin' On Receiving End Of MA's Most Ridiculous Lawsuit Of 2017

Perhaps the most ridiculous thing was the outcome.

You know it's bad when the attorney bringing a lawsuit describes it as a "minor thing" and admits to having misgivings about continuing with it before continuing with it anyway. The result: Dunkin' Donuts was on the receiving end of the most ridiculous lawsuit of 2017, according to a list of ridiculous lawsuits compiled by the U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform. (Hint: it involves a Worcester-area man and fake butter.)

The story goes like this: Jan Polanik filed two lawsuits accusing more than 20 Dunkin' Donuts franchises in Massachusetts of using a butter substitute on his bagels when he ordered a bagel with butter. The class-action suits represented Dunkin' Donuts customers who "ordered a baked product, such as a bagel, with butter, but instead received margarine or butter substitute between June 24, 2012, and June 24, 2016."

As seemingly frivolous as the lawsuit may have been, it wasn't for naught. Polanik wound up with an undisclosed settlement, and the Boston Herald reported the lawsuit forced Dunks to change its "butter-serving protocol."

And while we're here: One lawsuit we think should have made ILR's top 10 list involves the Quincy woman who sued President Trump over her "loss of enjoyment of life."

Rossi Wade wanted $1 billion.

The case was dismissed.

Nice try.
