Ex-Worcester DA Candidate Pleads Not Guilty In Conspiracy Case

Blake Rubin is facing conspiracy and witness intimidation charges in connection to a Worcester human trafficking case.

WORCESTER, MA — Two local attorneys — including one who once ran for the Worcester County District Attorney seat — pleaded not guilty on Friday to charges of conspiracy and witness intimidation over their roles in a recent human trafficking case. Lawyers Blake Rubin and Amanda Cavanaugh are facing charges of conspiracy and witness intimidation, according to prosecutors.

Rubin and Cavanaugh talked about preventing a witness from testifying in the trial of Fabian Beltran, prosecutors allege. Beltran was found guilty in early 2019 of forcing a woman into prostitution while she was addicted to heroin.

Prosecutors allege that Rubin and Cavanaugh — who was representing the woman Beltran trafficked — had conversations about keeping the victim out of Massachusetts during Beltran's trial. Beltran was sentenced to 6 to 8 years in prison last January.

Rubin ran against longtime Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. in 2018. He ended up losing by more than 110,000 votes.

The Plymouth County District Attorney's office is prosecuting the case. Rubin and Cavanaugh are set to appear in court next on Feb. 25, according to a Plymouth DA's Office spokesperson. They were both released on personal recognizance.
