Feds Charge Worcester Men In Jeep Wrangler Swindle

The two men worked together to create a phony check for $56,000 to buy the Jeep from a Newton dealer, prosecutors said.

WORCESTER, MA — A Worcester man pleaded guilty this week in federal court after he was charged with wire fraud in a scheme to acquire a pricey Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, according to prosecutors.

David Hogan, 58, used a fake check to purchase the $56,000 Jeep from a Newton dealership in March 2021, according to prosecutors. When the money didn't come through, the dealership repossessed the Jeep, but a followup investigation revealed the bank account linked to the check was opened with a stolen identity.

The check was printed by Brandon Brouillard, 28, prosecutors said. Brouillard has been charged with two counts of bank fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft in a separate scheme to buy an $83,000 Chevrolet Camaro. Brouillard previously pleaded guilty and will be sentenced in September, according to the U.S. Attorney's office.
